Officially, Malaysian Muslims angry

Kuala Lumpur (menjelma.com) - The Malaysian government is trying to defuse religious tensions following reports that the Christian church leaders were working to make an official religion, according to the Associated Press. Muslim activists have filed a complaint with the police demanding to immediately conduct an investigation for what they believe is a threat to Islam in the Muslim-majority country. Christian leaders deny the accusations by claiming the allegations are intended to create suspicion and division between Malay Muslims and other religions. This charge appears on the internet in a post by two anonymous political blogger, and to spread when the Malaysian envoy newspaper reported on its front page with the heading "Malaysia A Christian Country?" The report said that at a recent meeting by the tens of clergy, they promised to make Christianity the official religion and to ensure that the Prime Minister is a Christian. Christians in Malaysia amounted to about 10 percent of the total population of 28 million. Malay-language newspaper was owned by Prime Minister Najib Razak from the ruling party. Najib Razak himself said that the authorities would investigate the claims of the newspaper. "Calm down until we get fkata," said Najib. "If there are people who try to harm the national peace, we will not let that happen because the most important is national harmony." Christian groups recognize that they indeed had a meeting last week, but claimed that they discussed the issue of religion, not politics. (Haninmazaya / arrahmah.com)
